Getting Back to Normal After a Long Vacation

We’ve all been there. Whether it be taking time off work or a school vacation, going back to your regular schedule can be hard after being out for a week.

This was my first paid vacation from work and I loved every minute of it. Leaving cold Michigan for a warmer North Carolina was not a hard sell and my parents babied me the whole time.

Everything has been great, but going back to work and normal life leaves a bittersweet feeling. Here are a few tips on how I am embracing getting back to normal.

  1. Prepare!

I purposely got a flight home earlier so I have the rest of the day to mentally prepare for the work week coming. This is essential when returning from a long break. Cleaning, wiring down, and making a plan for the week will help you not feel overwhelmed.

  1. Get Plenty of Rest

This vacation has totally thrown off my sleeping pattern. For the past week, I’ve claimed 2am as my new bedtime and now I have to pay for it. Getting back to a regular sleeping pattern is a must, so getting plenty of sleep the night before work will help reset that.

  1. Eat a Healthy Meal and Exercise

With my mom being 8 hours away, I’ve longed for her cooking! (Her biscuits, fried chicken, and chicken dumplings to be exact). She cooked every day I was there and my so called “diet” was a thing of the past. When returning home it is important to eat a balanced meal (light on the carbs/fat) and to continue my exercise regimen.

  1. Hydrate!

That week between Christmas and New Year’s is always a drinking fest. Between the spiked egg nog, holiday cocktails and champagne, I was clearly buzzed for at least 85% of the week. Hydration is the key!  This will help release the many toxins you’ve consumed and your body will love you for it.

  1. Unwind

I know this is the point of a vacation, but sometimes you need a “break” from your break. I personally find that having some time to reflect and gain mental clarity will do you a world of good in the end.
